Acid Staining (or chemical staining)

Acid Staining promotes the transformation from artist to concretist

Acid Staining is probably the most versatile field of decorative concrete. The number and configuration of patterns and colours is virtually unlimited.

Acid stained floors have gained much respect as demands for durability combined with low maintenance increase. Also, with radiant floor heating becoming the standard, acid stained floors are adding decorative touches to interior (and exterior) projects that can be compared to artwork rather than flooring.

Cost Comparisons:

  • A basic one-coat application of stain and sealer can be competitive with inexpensive tile and carpet.
  • A multi-coat stain application with decorative saw-cuts can be competitive with high-quality carpet and low priced tile
  • An advanced stain application using faux techniques and complex saw-cut patterns can be compared to wood flooring and ceramic and quarry tiles
  • Decorative sandblasting and/or engraving to the advanced stain application can be compared to lower-priced slate, marble, and terrazzo

For contractors or owners interested in acid staining, we have developed mix designs exclusively for acid staining. Our acid stain mixes are designed to promote richness in colour and uniformity and are formulated specifically for application of stain and decorative chemical treatments.

Coloured Concrete

For indoor or outdoor applications

With decorative concrete, the only limiting factor is your imagination.

About Colours: As with all natural materials, colour variations are normal in concrete, both coloured and uncoloured. Some factors that affect “in-place” colour of concrete are finishing techniques, natural variation in materials, weather conditions ie., humidity, temperature, exposure to direct sunlight or shade.

About Contractors: When deciding to go with coloured concrete, we recommend choosing an experienced contractor who provides written specifications, quotations, and example projects for you to see. We strongly recommend that you visit projects completed by your contractor as different finishing techniques will produce a variety of results. Also, choosing a colour on a colour chart should be used as a guide, actual colours can be somewhat different from those on our charts. If you are considering coloured concrete, we would be happy to provide you with a list of competent ‘Colour Crete’ installers.

About Maintenance: Concrete colour and texture may change over time due to pollutants, dirt, exposure to weather, or surface wear. The use of de-icing materials in the winter can seriously damage concrete. We recommend the use of a sealer to minimize the effects of weathering and to protect against de-icers. Before any work is done, ask your contractor or us for more details on how to protect and keep your new ‘Colour Crete’ investment looking its best for years to come.
